Fancy a photo of you going for a swim in your wedding gown? Trash the Dress, a.k.a. Day After Shoot, is a recent development in modern wedding photography. It allows you, the bride, to capture images that would have been impossible on your wedding day and to take your wedding gown on a second outing.
On your wedding day, you’ll likely spend a fair amount of time lifting your dress over mud puddles and avoiding red wine. It took ages to find the right dress and you’ll want it to remain pristine. Trash the Dress sessions throw this caution to the wind; your dress is taken on a fashion shoot on a beach, in the woods, wherever you want. You and your dress, which would have only been worn on your wedding day, get another chance to capture great, fashion images.
A popular location for Trash the Dress shoots is the beach. Taking your dress for a swim and conjuring up “From Here to Eternity” styled scenes can make for some great images. I’m based on the south coast and the beaches in the summers make for beautiful shots. Urban locations, with gritty graffiti and exposed construction sites, make for a lovely juxtaposition of bride and scenery. Accessories like wellies add to the mix.
The shoot itself is a lot of fun. Trash the Dress sessions are lighthearted and relaxed as you’re not worried about getting chocolate fondant on your train. Instead, you and your photographer will focus on capturing beautiful and adventurous portraits. This is not your mother’s wedding photography.
“Trash” the Dress is a bit of a misnomer. Unless you take scissors to your gown, in all likelihood your dress will merely require a dry clean. In the sessions I’ve shot, one trip to the cleaners (which is typically necessary after the wedding anyway) and the dress looked new.
